The Thief begins with a father and son talking on the phone. During the conversation, the father mentions, once again, how he can't understand how all his Topps trading cards worth anything seem nowhere to be found. Unbeknownst to him, his son knows. He and his now deceased friend had stolen the rookie cards years prior, when they were teenagers, so they could trade them.

It's been over twenty-five years since the pilfering, but it still haunts the perpetrator. Wishing his father would forget about them doesn't seem to be a possibility, so to ease his conscience he decides to confess and offer to atone for his sins by giving his father the baseball cards he still has in his possession.

Michael Frissore's short story is a surprising tale of a man attempting to redeem himself. In the process, he finds out the awful truth about the death of his good friend and realizes exactly what type of personality his father possesses. I was impressed by the bombshell ending, which proves not everyone is as naïve as they pretend to be.
