Thirteen years ago, Frank Pavlicek left the NYPD under less than ideal circumstances. Now, the divorced father of a teenage daughter, he works as a private investigator in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he indulges his passion for falconry - and tries to live outside the shadow of his past.

Frank is hunting with his red-tailed hawk Armistead, when he finds it. A teenage boy's body - barely concealed behind a pile of brush. But what Frank finds in the dead boy's wallet is even more disturbing his daughter's phone number, scribbled in ink on the edge of a bill. He pockets the evidence and flees. Days later, his daughter is in jail. His past is coming back to haunt him. And his reputation - and life - are on the line.

This is the first book in the Frank Pavlicek series. When Frank Pavlicek and his partner are involved in the killing of an unarmed person during a shootout in New York, they are fired. Frank and Jake move to Virginia where Frank opens a Private Investigation office and Cat Cahill, the officer that was under fire when they made the fateful decision to fire back, owns a restaurant in nearby Leonardston. Frank is a falconer and is out with his bird, Armistead, when he stumbles across the badly decomposing body. The investigation into his death becomes complex when his daughter, Nicole is arrested as the prime suspect. Frank is sure she has been set-up but does not know why. Frank sets out to find the culprit and get his daughter's name cleared.

Andy Straka writes a good story that grips you and pulls you in. An ex-detective, makes for a great Private Investigator. PI Frank Pavlicek is such a down to earth ex-detective who has a knack of getting involved in murder cases. If you like mysteries, PI stories and falconry, pick this one up.

A Witness Above Frank Pavlicek Mysteries Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Andy Straka Eddie Frierson AP Audio Books Books Reviews

This first of the 5 Frank Pavlicek PI books that I have just completed was interesting and very readable. There were some editorial errors that were missed in the e-book proofreading but they were easily discernable and did not deminish the storyline. It was refreshing learning about a detective who uses his inteligence and previous experience as a NYPD officer to get to the root of the problem solving instead of using his weapon or extraordinary physical prowess. I also enjoyed the occasional diversion from the plot line by bringing in the falconery angle along with the relationship of Frank and his hawk to the overall progress of his case. This first book "hooked" me into ordering the entire 5 book collection and I found each subsequent story a bit better and each more professionaly penned. They are all easy reads without very complicated plots or sub-plots, but sometimes with interesting "twists", which made for enjoyable summertime reading hours.
A strong debut for this PI series set in Virginia. Straka wove a good plot throwing suspicion on several characters along the way. The mystery isn’t hard to solve though the smooth prose makes it worth following through to the end.

The characters here are believable and life-like and just like Life not all of them were likable. There is some profanity but it doesn’t bother me; if anything it brings a bit more realism to the story, people swear.

Using falconry as Frank’s off-time pursuit is a unique change from the typical PI sitting at a bar or his desk knocking a few back and thinking about which woman he is going to chase today.

Straka does an excellent job with vivid scenery and backdrop along with a clear view of life in that part of the country.

This is not an edge of the seat thriller though it is written so well it is easy to keep reading and I didn’t want to put it down. I will be looking for more in this series.
An excellent murder mystery set in my home state of Virginia. The prologue gives you sufficient background on the main character, Frank Pavlivek, to understand his methods and techniques. The story progresses in an orderly fashion and will not leave the reader with any head scratching questions at the last page. I will put this author on my will read list.

I have rated this book 4.25 stars.

I obtained this book from in format.
P.I. Frank Pavlicek was a young police officer until a suspicious shooting takes his career away early in the story. Years later he becomes involved in another murder, the second murder would tie into the first. With the two intertwined that really only leaves two suspects. This was a story that I, [being no genius] figured out by the second chapter, then you very well might too. The characters that are introduced into the story as it evolves, are interesting, but if the murderer is apparent, there is no mystery to speak of. .
This was an interesting story that holds promise for a great series to come. I liked Pavlicek as a main character. He's smart and determined, but also has some all too human flaws.

I know nothing about falcons or the sport of "falconry". While we're given some insight into this, that aspect does not overshadow the story. I was intrigued by Pavlicek's relationship with his bird, and I found this approach refreshing and unique. We never learn exactly how or why Pavlicek became a falconer, and I would have liked a little background on that to help me to better understand his character.

My main problem with this book was the plot's execution. We have a lot of characters, with several offshoots in the storyline. Consequently, the story's path forward often feels murky and convoluted. Paradoxically, the 'bad guy' feels glaringly obvious. I was not at all surprised by this "twist". In fact, I think I groaned when that was revealed.

I also felt that we were left with several loose ends. For instance, Pavlicek's ex-wife plays a vital role in their daughter's problems. I can't get into exactly what that role is without giving spoilers, but she does some things that put her daughter's future and life in danger. Yet this is never sufficiently explained. Also, Pavlicek himself does two highly questionable things in relation to his daughter and her predicament. Again, I can't say what exactly without giving away details. For me, though, two actions in particular seemed totally out of sync with his overwhelming concern and determination to work outside the legal box in order to do what was best for her.

The characters, as a whole, feel stereotypical. We have the nasty, money-hungry ex-wife, the problem teen, the black Christians, and the gangbangers. I would have liked some deviation from these stereotypes. Pavlicek and his friend Toronto are really the only characters who stand out as unique.

One last thing that caught my attention throughout is more an observation than a specific critique. I assume this book is a revised edition of an earlier release. Details, at times, feel like they were written prior to the digital revolution, and were overlooked during revision. Cell phones is one such issue. Through parts of the book, characters behave as if cell phones were not ubiquitous. I found myself wondering why Pavlicek would give out the phone number of a friend's home where he was staying. Then people couldn't find him, because he wasn't there. Then suddenly he had his cell phone, though he rarely used it and didn't receive calls that way in emergencies.

Despite what I perceive as the flaws, this is still an interesting read. I think Pavlicek could lead us on some fascinating adventures in the future.
