What if your worst nightmare was the only thing you wanted?
Lydia worries she'll never recover from a violent assault at the hands of an intruder. Therapy isn't working and her friends aren't a comfort. All she can think about is how helpless and afraid she was.
Then she meets Isaac.
He's everything she wants to be cool, calm and controlled. Trauma doesn't seem to affect him. Emotions don't bother him. And best of all, he's prepared to teach her. He shows her how to fight. How to defend herself. How to guard her heart.
But Isaac soon finds he can't guard his heart from her. She's starting to make him see all the things he's been missing, in his closed off and far too brutal life. The only problem is
He has a terrible secret.
And if he lets himself give in to the desire that's building between them, her world may well be torn apart again.

I love Charlotte Stein's books, they're all written wonderfully, and there's so much emotion in each one, this one included. Let's not get this twisted, I did like this book. Two things though: I'm bummed at how short this was compared to how much is costs, which colors my opinion of the book as a whole. More importantly, what really bummed me out here, is that there isn't an HEA, there's no HFN, it kind of ends with a "Happy I Guess?" It's like I got the prologue and the first few chapters of a really really awesome book. I'm familiar with her writing and I know this book follows essentially the same format as her other books, it just didn't work 100% for me this time. I'm going to reread it later, with different expectations, and see if I feel better about the book then.Product details

Never Better A Dark Obsession Novel edition by Charlotte Stein Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
You crawl inside the characters heads...it's intense. And yes big plot twist which you kinda know is going to happen and you just reading thinking "Oh man, this is totally going to blow up hard." The sex is hot but as always in Charlotte Stein - love is very tender, very emotional and all out.
The ending was rushed, but it was a good book. Mostly, the ending was a just a bit too quickly wrapped up. It's satisfying, but could have been stronger with another 2-3 chapters and a bit more of a final arc. Quick read! Sexy and sweet.
One of my farorite erotic writers. Hero was tough to pin down in terms of his sexual hangups but absolutely adorable. Frankly, it took a special heroine to recognize his appeal. My only complaint, and it's minor really was the ending was a little loose. I mean, it was tied up with an HEA, I think but still, could have been a little more complete.
I loved this story. I saw the twist coming from about 2 chapters in, but I didn’t mind at all. The characters were so quirky and charming, despite dealing with a dark subject matter.
Plus, how can those of us of a certain age not love a John Cusack reference?
As others have said, I would have liked a more solid HEA. I can assume it happened, but it felt a bit unsatisfying. Not enough not to read this, but enough to comment on.
I liked this book, it had witty banter between the two main characters, awesome movie references and quotes, and a nice story which I wouldn’t really call a “dark obsession”. The one thing I dislike about books like this is when they put in the blurb that one of the main characters has a big “secret” that could destroy the relationship, and the big secret reveal happens at the end of the book, but it is so easy to figure out from the beginning what that secret is, that the only person it really is revealed to is the other main character. If they would just not mention the secret, it would be so much better because it might actually be a surprise to the reader.
Aaah, Charlotte Stein. I don't know how she does it, but she manages to pull off a new twist on erotic romance every time. This story is loosely connected to Never Sweeter, but has a different voice and feel to it. I have to be honest, the voice of the female protagonist took a little bit of getting used to for me, I didn't like her until past the midway point of the book, but I somehow felt more rewarded by the end because I'd stuck with the story in spite of her getting on my nerves. It wasn't her actions as much as it was her dialogue, but the cranked up tension and suspense toward the end made it absolutely worthwhile. The ending kept me guessing, too.
So. Charlotte Stein has the most amazing voice as a writer. This book reads almost like a minimalist stage play of a fairytale, where we learn the most about the characters through their quirky, affected dialogue. There's some narrative and ancillary scenes that keep things moving along, but the heart of the book is Isaac & Lydia talking & flirting & teasing & finally, finally having fabulously open & dirty sex. It's really kind of magnificent.
The last section of the book came up on me unexpectedly. After so much cerebral character building I was totally unprepared for suspense & action. Maybe I'm dim or maybe she lulled me into complaisance, I'm not sure, but all of a sudden things got exciting, then they got terrifying, and then I wanted to find Charlotte and give a piece of my mind because NO WAY it ends like that. It kind of does, but mostly doesn't as you'll gather from other reviews here. I choose to believe there's a fairytale ending somewhere after the epilogue, so I'm satisfied. Would I have liked it to be written for me? Sure. But this isn't a book for the lazy, so I'm not surprised the ending was something we need to put a little effort into.
This series, though not perfect, is an incredible body of work. Bravo.
