Malbeck the Dark One has returned. An army of darkness marches from the north, crushing all who oppose it under its muddy black boot. The drums of war echo throughout Kraawn as the struggle between light and dark teeters in the balance, fueled on the one hand by the greed of the Forsworn, and on the other by the ultimate desire for all that is good to survive.
Tarsis, the last city in the north, is laid waste, decimated by Malbeck’s army. Kromm, the King of Tarsis, battles for his life as the dark hunters of Malbeck relentlessly pursue him through the Tundren Mountains. His mighty army has been destroyed and its remnants are now scattered throughout the lands.
But he is not alone. He is surrounded by his elite guard, along with Addalis, his court wizard, and Allindrian, the half-elf Blade Singer. But will that be enough to thwart that which hunts him?
The road to Finarth is now open and few are left to stop the Dark One. The hope of the land rests in the combined power of its last remaining heroes. Jonas Kanrene, cavalier to Shyann, has been given his next mission. He must find King Kromm and bring him to Finarth. The bow of Taleen, cavalier to Bandris, and the sword of Fil Tanrey, warrior of Finarth, accompanies Jonas on this perilous task.
Their quest is fraught with death, sacrifice, and courage. But will their courage see them through their mission? Can Jonas and his companions prevail against the Forsworn and protect the king?
These are questions that can only be answered by the strength of their blades, and more importantly, the courage in their hearts.

The Rise of Malbeck The Cavalier Trilogy Book 2 eBook Jason L McWhirter

As a fantasy freak, I can't emphasize enough how refreshing it's been to read the first two books of this trilogy. We all know that the hallmark of great fantasy is when the author is able to bring you along on the journey, to take you away from the realm of reality for a time. And that is exactly what Jason McWhirter has done.
There is something tangible in each of the characters (even the dark ones) - something that is recognizable. Even with their great gifts and powers, they still have doubts and insecurities. As I read, I often found myself thinking of how certain traits remind me of someone I know. At other times, I try to imagine myself as one of the characters (a Blade Singer, usually).
I know I'm not adding any spoilers, because some other reviews I've seen have mentioned the killing off of characters. This is nothing new to fans of George RR Martin and other fantasy authors who are bold enough to bring that touch of reality to their story.
Another thing that really stands out is the detail in the battle scenes, and the description of characters, clothing, weapons, creatures, and landscapes. As a fantasy gamer, this is an appealing aspect to me. The author understands that this is part of what makes reading an experience and an adventure, rather than a function.
Finishing the second book in a great trilogy always leaves me excited for what is to come, and a bit sorrowful knowing that the next book will be the final part of the story.

The Rise of Malbeck The Cavalier Trilogy Book 2 eBook Jason L McWhirter Reviews

Devoured the first book, devoured the 2nd book, and am now eagerly awaiting the next book! What a great story of the triumph of the human spirit over dabiliting odds and then to have almost everything given to you only to have it yanked out from under you again and still refusing to give in to despair and depression.
Devoured this and it's predecessor in no time. Absolutely enjoyed them. SO worth the pittance they are selling for. I have been waiting for the third and final to be available at and, as of yet, it's not there. That's a little disheartening since the author's website has all three available, yet there is no version available......yet.
After the re-intro of all the characters there was danger on almost every page. Sword fights, magic, demon dogs, & orcs. I was glad that the Blade-singer was back. I really like that female elf character. The King and his family were equally awesome. I was surprised by the ending, which doesn't often happen. I can't wait for the next book and find out what happens in the battle of good and evil.
This book was incredibly well done. The first book was good but somewhat predictable but this one has some surprising twists and turns. You can really see the growth of the author in this book and you get a better sense of the characters as well. I definitely recommend this book and will be buying the next book in the series.
The prologue grabbed me from the start. Who doesn't like a book that starts out with an assassin, the mystique of his target, and intense action? And it just got better. I loved McWhirter's first book and I think perhaps this book is even better. It's always hard to match the first part of a story, especially when so much of book one concentrated on Jonas and his training, but I think the author was successful in doing just that for book two. I absolutely loved the pacing. Lots of action, the plot thickened, old characters were strengthened as new interesting characters were introduced. As stated in other reviews its a classic good vs. evil story that has you cheering for the good guys. I felt as if the author's writing flowed a bit smoother in this book than it did in "The Cavalier", which is good as I love to see the growth of a new writer. And of course it ended with me wanting more. I can't wait for book three.
This series is very surprising and absolutely worth the read and I would gladly pay more, but there are one too many characters dying off. I understand and appreciate the killing off of partially main characters but this is getting a little extreme for a trilogy. The conclusion is not even here and I'm wondering if there will be any one left that I care about. Still love the series and eagerly awaiting the next book
A great second book. A lot more action and intrigue, magic and adventure. Was pleasantly surprised by this series. Looking forward to the next!
